The 2017 Northern and Southern Appalachian Trail Rucks

No, I don't know what a "ruck" is either, but I looked it up in the dictionary. Ready Merriam-Webster defines it as "an indistinguishable gathering."

There are Southern and Northern Appalachian Trail Rucks scheduled for January 2017 where all sorts of gathering will be going on -- some of it distinguishable, no doubt.

At least one of the participants is rather distinguished too: our pal, Joe Harold, former manager of the Appalachian Trail Museum.

So, whatever the heck a ruck is -- you're invited to attend either or both of them and have fun with other hikers.

Southern Ruck at NOC

The Southern Ruck is an annual event held at the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) which really isn't near anything. Their address is Bryson City, North Carolina, because everyplace must be someplace. Just to make it a tad more confusing, please don't call NOC for details about the ruck. It's not their deal.

You can find out everything you'll need to know about the Southern Ruck by clicking HERE.

Starting on Friday, January 13th, you'll find folks there all weekend long. Attendance is free, but bring enough food and joy to share with others, please. You can spend the night and there's a fee, but if you can afford the gas to drive there, you have enough to sleep there. Probably.

Northern Ruck in Bluemont, Virginia

I'm not sure who believes Bluemont, VA, is in the north of almost anything, but I like their thinking. One thing is certain: you'll love the Bear's Den Trail Center, where the ruck is celebrated.

Search for the Northern Ruck on Facebook and you'll find links to old rucks. Here's the link to the official 21st Annual ALDHA Northern Ruck, scheduled for January 25-27, 2017.

It's a Gathering of Hikers to talk trail. We'll tuckerize your pack, have work shops and answer your questions on hiking and the AT. We'll have the 2017 Appalachian Trail Thru-Hikers Companion, the Official AT guidebook. Please make reservations early and directly with the hostel (540-554-8708).

Please Note: Schedules are not readily available because these events are hosted by hikers. Thank you.
