Our pal, George, and the folks at Mountain Crossings Outfitters put on the Pretzel Logic for Appalachian Trail Thru-Hikers Show on Saturday, January 30, 2016 ... starring Pretzel (aka Matt Mason).

Pretzel has hiked all the famous trails and has a knack for sharing cool advice that Appalachian Trail thru-hikers will actually use.

His presentation was about the best I've ever heard. Here are a few happy tips I jotted down as he spoke.

Skip $10-15 titanium spoons. Use a McFlurry spoon! Just as light and free!

  • Calories do not equal nutrition. You must have nourishment.
  • Pack blocks of cheese.
  • Get a good sleeping bag (even if it's $540).
  • Don't waste money on rain jackets. They all leak or make you sweat. Either way, you're wet.
  • Be polite on the Trail. Yield to uphill hikers.
  • Shelters are public spaces. Don't expect to find room.
  • Don't fear being eaten by bears.
  • Micro-bears (mice) are more aggravating.
  • Don't be fooled by slick marketing. Test your stuff before you go.
  • Alcohol stoves are fast & simple but they can tip and spill burning fuel. Be careful.
  • Use trekking poles. Efficient & light. Pretzel suggests Black Diamond ergo corks.
