Does reality have a death grip on your hopes to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail, Bunkie? Are you living paycheck-to-paycheck? Got kids or siblings or parents who rely on you? We understand.

Considering how hard it is to get a long lunch hour, you might be reluctant to ask your boss for five or six or seven months off ... promising to return to your job (maybe) afterward.

Happens to the best of us. We dream of hiking the Trail ... downhill all the way ... with pretty birdies chirping ... beautiful people smiling at us ... and gorp trees blooming under a blue, bugless sky.

Spoiler Warning: According to one survey, 63% of Americans (can you say "fractal dimension"?) do not have enough savings to pay for even one unanticipated $500 expense.

What's a hiker to do?

Enjoy an afternoon or a few days at an event celebrating the Appalachian Trail! Celebrations begin in Georgia in January and the fun heads northward all through the hiking season, ending in Millinocket, Maine, at the (ready?) Trails End Festival.

Come see (and smell) The Ones who are pursuing their dreams and ours by hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Warning: Approach thru-hikers slowly. Make no sudden moves. Bring Snickers, hot sauce and pizza.

Live it up for a little while -- with other AT dreamers and hikers -- at 2016 Appalachian Trail Events.
