Counting hikers trying to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail is like herding cats, although cats smell better. As of October 22, 2015, the official count at the southern terminus of the AT in Amicalola Falls State Park was 1,491 northbound hopefuls and 18 southbound hikers finished the Trail. They all have Appalachian Trail hiker stories.

Baxter State Park says 641 folks trying to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail signed in during 2014. An unofficial count is "more than 900" now, with more scurrying their way to Katahdin before weather shuts down the Trail.

Some are accounts of successful summits and happy tales of blissful blisters and friendly townies. A few are sad accounts of broken limbs, broken gear and broken spirits.

That's what it's like to attempt to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. It's unlike the world where everybody gets a trophy and nobody fails if they just show up.
