Our friends at Baxter State Park posted a Facebook update on October 14, 2015, that should not worry northbound hikers in the 100-Mile-Wilderness:
We are about to wrap up a great summer season!
Thanks so much to all of you folks who hiked, canoed, fished, camped, photographed, and made memories in the wildness and beauty of Baxter Park with us.
See you next summer!
I called the park and spoke with the dear lady who always says, "I can't give you any quotes."
She said Baxter State Park is open for day use.
The final night for camping was Wednesday, October 15th. That was the last day for Day Use Parking Reservations too.
The park gate will open for day use at 6 AM, but ALL parking will be on a first-come first-served basis.
Yes, we can still summit Baxter Peak (commonly called "Katahdin").
If you ask "when does the Appalachian Trail close" you can almost hear her eyes roll. That's because no one knows "when the weather will force it to close."
For now, the AT is open for day-use hiking. Count on an 8-12 hour trek to summit Katahdin and scoot back down safely.
