Trail Days 2014 in Damascus, Virginia (a hop, skip and hundreds of hills north of the Tennessee border) begins on Friday, May 16th.
Unless you count the yard sale that overtakes the town on Saturday, May 10th, as the kickoff to Trail Days.
Or maybe you think Trail Days starts on Wednesday the 14th, when a bazillionty-two vendors ply their goodies and gear to those of us who absolutely must buy something useful, whether we need it or not.
Thursday the 15th is Trail Days Ministry day at the campground, where good folks will do good deeds with "home cooked meals" at the bingo hall (would I lie to you?), free showers and free gear repair.
Friday's offers include free haircuts (no mention of any charge for tick removal, but be prepared), exams for Trail dogs (four-legged only, sorry) and a free charging station!
Roughly 107% of all famous Appalachian Trail hikers will have a seminar or do something that famous people do on Friday. At 8 PM, there's a film screening by Kori Feener and Zach Davis at the Rock School. Hard Way Home follows the filmmaker as she attempts to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail in an effort to let go of both expectations and her past.
For me, Trail Days begins on Saturday the 17th with the $5 all you can eat pancake breakfast ... with the Hiker's Parade at 2 PM.
Trail Days will begin for you whenever you get there. It's easy to find on the Appalachian Trail or follow the signs leading to Damascus.
