Herds and hordes of hikers are heading toward Damacus, Virginia, to party hearty at Trail Days later this month.

It's not the most picturesque word picture, but imagine a big long snake that is digesting a recent rat. That lump is similar to what is referred to as "the bubble" of hikers on the Appalachian Trail. It's the equivalent of a traffic jam in the wilderness.

If I understand correctly, the bubble is in North Carolina and Tennessee. They'll arrive in Damascus, just across the Tennessee border, in plenty of time.

Estimated times of arrival are always weather dependent. The thunderstorms predicted for the Damascus region this weekend won't help too much.

As of Wednesday, May 7th, no severe weather warnings have been issued but that doesn't mean they won't be.

If you don't give a rip about the weather, click here for a great Bob Dylan song with a reference to avoiding storms.

Keep your eyes on the prize:

"Hiking the entire Appalachian Trail isn't hard. Just begin on Springer Mountain in Georgia and head north until you mount Mount Katahin. Pffft. How hard can that be?" said no one ever. ~~ Photograph by Robert Sutherland
