Tis the season to love the perfect hiking weather in the South. The weather is so nice and consistent that you could spray paint the forecast on a wall for the next few weeks.

Sunny and warm with a chance of thunderstorms at times. Highs in the 70s and lows near 50.

A passel of northbound hikers are fixin to hit Trail Days in Damascus, Virginia, on May 16-18, 2014, but I met one NoBo in late March at the Pine Grove Furnace General Store.

If you're headed to Trail Days -- by car or by foot -- you'll be in good company. Unless you toss a now-forbidden water balloon at a beauty queen, cop, member of the honor guard or scout troop. Try that and you'll be up to your neck in bad company.

Water guns are still allowed -- with the same restrictions on targets.

Keep your eyes on the prize:

"Hiking the entire Appalachian Trail isn't hard. Just begin on Springer Mountain in Georgia and head north until you mount Mount Katahin. Pffft. How hard can that be?" said no one ever. ~~ Photograph by Robert Sutherland
