Some years, the first few weeks on the Appalachian Trail for northbound thru-hike hopefuls is filled with snow & sleet.

Other years, it seems to rain every day.

So far in 2014, the weather has been the worst of both those worlds.

That's about to change for hikers heading into Hot Springs, North Carolina for this weekend's Appalachian Trail Festival.

How would you like sunny skies with high temperatures in the mid-70s? Not a problem.

Unless the forecast changes.

As it does so quickly.
