I have good news and I have bad news about Franklin's 2014 April Fool's Trail Days.
First for the good news: For the past few years, Franklin, North Carolina, has had splendid weather for their annual April Fool's Trail Days Celebration that honors those who love and hike the Appalachian Trail.
Now for the bad news: The weather this year on Saturday, March 29th, pushed the festivities indoors.
Gone were the folks selling hula-hoops, hiking sticks, T-shirts and displaying hiking merchandise by Franklin's dandy gazebo.
Merchants were prepared for larger crowds. Brooke Smith was working at Anna Bedell's, an exceedingly interesting shop in downtown Franklin.
Brooke had a basket of free oranges on the park bench outside for Appalachian Trail hikers and passersby. Jacob Smith talked his mom into getting a picture of them together.
Surely next year there will be music playing, kids getting their faces painted and hundreds of folks milling around dozens of displays trying to inspire us to hike into the hills with their gear on our backs or feet.
The presentations weren't rained out at the town hall. In fact, most of them were packed with information and wisdom about how to tackle the Trail successfully.
Hiker dudes didn't have their spirits dampened. Two in particular decided to dress up for their sprint into town.
They spiffed themselves up with free paisley ties from the local thrift shop and put on their best smiles for the hikerettes in town.
No doubt they delighted the ladies. None whatsoever. How do I know? I had a tie just like Rock Sloth's. Oh, yeah. Women go crazy for a sharp-dressed man.
Some folks are so dependable, they're always around. We're thankful for all the Appalachian Trail Conservancy ATC) does to promote and protect the Trail. It's always good to see folks from the ATC passing out helpful Trail info.
The volunteers with the Nantahala Hiking Club are just as faithful and informative.
More Appalachian Trail Festivals will be held in 2014. We'll see you there!
