Franklin, North Carolina, is an official Appalachian Trail Community, as designated by our friends at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC), because it is such a hiker-friendly town.

The Appalachian Trail (AT) doesn't go smack-dab through town, as it does in other locations. In fact, the AT is 11-miles away. That's a long way to walk or hitchhike for a Snickers, but Franklin is a very popular place for long-distance hikers to resupply.

Franklin is also a very popular place to celebrate the Trail on or about April Fool's Day.

That's when a double-whammy of fun whups Franklin upside the head (as we say in the South). The town hosts April Fool's Trail Days in its historic park and along a street or two. There's enough music, food, vendors, face painting, dancing and hula-hooping for anyone who knows how to have fun.

The 6th Annual April Fool's Trail Days takes place on Saturday, March 29, 2014. You can hear stories about the Trail or tell a few yourself. Seminars will be held in a nice building you'll want to visit. (Think: clean restrooms.) It's the perfect place to meet a thru-hiker and quickly wash your hands afterward.

If that's not enough for you, Ron Haven kicks off the 10th Annual April Hiker Fool Bash Weekend (EIEIO) on Friday the 27th at 6 PM at Franklin's now-famous Sapphire Inn. The Hiker Bash is where the real hikers hang out. It's easy to find (especially if you're downwind) on East Main Street. Just look for the motel with tents on the front lawn.

Fishermen, hikers and other storytellers will regale you with Trail Talk of amorous bears, hiking up icy cliffs, wrestling with bigfoot and how to look all enticing and spiffy, in spite of not bathing for a month. Ron says some of what you hear might actually be true! That's probably just an April Fool's Trail Days joke.

Ron's Hiker Bash starts bashing just after 6 PM each evening. Stop by to meet the folks you've passed on the Trail and grab a couple of burgers that you've been dreaming about on the Trail.

Franklin's April Fool's Trail Days is a perfect way to spend a day with your family or other strangers. See you there.
