Mountain Crossings Outfitters is located at the intersection of two of my happy places: the Appalachian Trail at Neel Gap and Georgia's Route 129, one of America's truly great roads for motorcycling.
You don't have to be Spock to consider it "illogical" to place one of America's truly great outfitters in such a remote location.
At least until you arrive and immerse yourself in the exuberant charm of the unique building that houses the shop.
The rock building was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps and completed in 1937, along with the Appalachian Trail.
The onsite hostel, the glorious views from the lanai, the trivia-worthy portico, the incredibly rare ceiling beams, the spent hiking shoes from forgotten thru-hikers and the wind chimes are enough to justify a trip.
On Saturday, March 1, 2014, "George" and the gang ramp it all up a few notches. That's when they're sponsoring the Mountain Crossings Hike for Habitat, with all proceeds helping fund Habitat for Humanity in Towns/Union Counties.
Folks will meet at 8:00 AM in the dirt parking lot across from Helton Creek Road, a mile or so north of Mountain Crossings and just a bit south of Vogel State Park. Movie buffs will immediately remember this spot. It's right where the runaway trailer truck obliterated a "mobile home" in the movie, Black Dog.
Please Note: Watch for oncoming traffic. Thank you.
For a "suggested donation" of $20 for this worthy cause, you can climb Blood Mountain with other outstandingly cool people. By the time you're ready to come off the mountaintop, there will be food and bluegrass music waiting for you down below.
The new owners, George and Logan, are opening their doors to their first annual kickoff party to celebrate the start of another thru-hiker season.
You can purchase a raffle ticket to win a day pack, trekking poles and other stuff. (You don't have to be present for the drawing to win.)
To maximize the fund raising for Habitat for Humanity, you can get lazier folks to sponsor your hike. George (aka Georganna) will tell you how. Please scroll down for ways to contact her.
See you there.
