There are bigger and more famous towns along the Appalachian Trail (AT), but the folks in Duncannon, PA, happily view their designation as an Appalachian Trail Community as a way to protect and preserve their part of the AT.
The Duncannon Appalachian Trail Community (DATC) website says,
In the coming years, the Duncannon Appalachian Trail Community Advisory Committee hopes that our slogan "Promoting, Protecting and Preserving Our Outdoor Recreational Resources for Future Generations" will carry over into all changes being considered for the Duncannon Borough, including improved river access and beautification of the town.
The Committee [has] plans to ... enhance tourism opportunities for Duncannon as an outdoor recreation destination and encourage everyone to get outside [and] enjoy nature....
We support the efforts of the Trail Clubs maintaining the AT in the Greater Duncannon Area, including MCM (Mountain Club of Maryland), SATC (Susquehanna Appalachian Trail Club), CVATC (Cumberland Valley Appalachian Trail Club), and YHC (York Hiking Club).
DATC plans monthly meetings, an annual festival and fun events, such as the hike they've planned for Saturday, July 20, 2013.
It's a scavenger hunt on the Cornerstone Christian Trails, and it's a hike for the whole family (five and up, please).
This leisurely paced 1.14 mile hike wanders through woods and fields on easy terrain. The goal is to find as many things as you can to check off your scavenger sheet.
Take a hike! With the good folks in Duncannon, Pennsylvania.
