The Duncannon Appalachian Trail Community (DATC) is dedicated to promoting, protecting and preserving our outdoor recreational resources for future generations.
They're really good at it too. They don't simply dabble at promoting and protecting the Appalachian Trail (AT), they meet, share ideas, organize hikes, work on the Trail and they plan events to spread the news.
The Second Annual DATC Appalachian Trail Community Festival is scheduled for Saturday, June 1, 2013.
For what it's worth ... from my perspective ... the folks at DATC are a class act whom I expect to put on a great event.
A variety of hikes are scheduled for the morning hours on Saturday.
Then, from noon to 4 PM, Cumberland Street will be closed to traffic and lined with vendors selling wares, providing free information, promoting outdoor activities and advertising Duncannon area businesses.
Smokey the Bear will be in the area all afternoon. We're hoping he won't try to douse the grill of the Duncannon Fire Company as they prepare their delicious BBQ chicken.
If you've ever organized something that required the cooperation of more than three people or two cats, you know how maddening it can be. No matter who swears on their ancestor's various organs, vital folks don't show up and deliveries are sent to Timbukthree. With that in mind, DATC is on the lookout for trustworthy volunteers to pitch in on June 1st.
Vendors -- who (hello?) indirectly help pay for the event -- are also welcome to apply for space. Hiking clubs will find this festival to be a great place to present their organizations to an ideal target audience.
All in all, the DATC Appalachian Trail Festival is going to be constructive, informative, and plenty of fun for all ages -- and a fabulous way to introduce newbies to the AT.
If you have any doubts, join the DATC Advisory Committee at their next open meeting. It takes place on Monday, May 20th at 6:30 PM in Sorrento Pizza at 104 N Market St. If you have a flair for organization and leadership, this is a great opportunity for you to help guide the Duncannon community towards a better and brighter future.
You're also welcome to lend the DATC your hay wagon for the AT Festival, June 1st.
You have to be somewhere on Saturday, June 1st. You might as well have a good time in Duncannon, PA, at the Duncannon Appalachian Trail Community Festival.
