Dahlonega Trail Fest

Spring begins on March 20th in 2013. That, of course, marks the vernal equinox and the time when young and old hikers hit the Appalachian Trail (AT).

To celebrate these occasions, the very cool little town of Dahlonega, Georgia (Go ahead. Try to pronounce it. I dare you.) has great plans for Trail Fest 2013.

It's a hoot.

This year it's scheduled for Friday-Sunday, March 22-24.

Trail Fest kicks winter to the curb and turns our collective fancy toward the reemergence of flowers, warmer weather and thru-hikers (not necessarily in that order) hitting the northbound trail from Springer Mountain.

Springer Mountain -- a mere hop, skip and 50-mile jump from Dahlonega -- is where the Appalachian Trail begins in earnest. Only the exceptionally earnest will thru-hike to Maine's Mount Katahdin, which is 2,185.9 miles up the Trail.

Dahlonega is a delightful destination any day of the year, but Trail Fest makes it even delightfuller. Here are a few of the special treat you can expect:

  • great food
  • fun music
  • excellent food
  • Appalachian Trail oriented vendors
  • authors & talks from AT hikers
  • hiking workshops
  • dandy music & tasty food
  • 5K Trail run

Attention Singles: Trail Fest is a wonderful way to meet healthy outdoorsy, hiker-type people.

Celebrate spring, love, the Appalachian Trail, and the last shower northbounders will take for approximately 175 days at Trail Fest 2013.
