Hiker Succumbs on Appalachian Trail

We regret to inform you that Vermont State Police report the death of Steven Reed, 62, of Cary, NC, who collapsed and died while hiking the Appalachian Trail near Shrewsbury, VT.

Rescue personnel from Mount Holly Rescue, Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Department, Regional Ambulance Service and State police responded to a call for help from two friends of Mr. Reed, Sunday afternoon, July 22, 2012.

Authorities conducted an autopsy on Monday, but police said they have not determined a specific cause of death. Foul play is not suspected.

We are grateful for the tremendous response by emergency workers.

We extend our condolences to Mr. Reed's family.
