The Appalachian Trail Conservancy has named Front Royal/Warren County, Virginia, as a new Appalachian Trail Community(TM) -- an honor bestowed by the nonprofit which is responsible for protecting the 2,181-mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail.
To celebrate this designation, there will be a day of family-oriented activities in Front Royal on April 21, 2012, including a 5.5-mile hike, guided by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, and outdoor skills-building games on the Village Commons.
"The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is proud to celebrate communities that are helping to protect and promote the Appalachian Trail," states the Appalachian Trail Conservancy's Community Program Manager Julie Judkins. "These new partnerships will increase local stewardship of public lands, support community initiatives for sustainable economic development and conservation planning as well as support healthy lifestyles for community citizens."
