You're hiking the Appalachian Trail. You're hungry, dirty, tired and (almost) sick of looking at trees all day. Someone tells you of a place where a van will drive you to a town that offers free home-cooked meals. Free showers. Free Internet. Free hot dogs. And real-live people! No, you're not delusional. Sometimes "too good to be true" really is true.
(OK, there's a catch. You have to sign up in advance for the free van ride and the free home-cooked meals, but some tickets for free hot dogs and stuff will be available at First Baptist Church.)
Damascus, Virginia, offers all of this and much more that's too good to be true every year during Trail Days -- held the weekend after Mother's Day. This year it's May 18th through the 20th.
You'll think you're in heaven to find a place filled with people who want to feed you, help you fix your gear, feed you and give you free medical screenings and first-aid. Got a four-footed best friend with you? Trail Days has a treat! Dr. John Roberts of VCA Highlands Animal Hospital will be giving free dog exams at the southern end of the Town Park on Friday morning. Is that cool or what?
Oh, yeah. There's free music, a talent show for thru-hikers, and a contra dance on Saturday. Seriously. There's no good reason to be anywhere else than Trail Days in Damascus, VA on May 18-20th!
Sign up is required for the free shuttle pick-up at Route 11 & I-81 -- mile 534 on the AT.
